The Letter That Changed Ramanujan’s Life

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a self-taught Indian mathematician who made significant contributions to the field of mathematics in the early 20th century. He was born in 1887 in a small village in South India and grew up in poverty. Despite this, he showed an early aptitude for mathematics and spent much of his childhood working on mathematical problems.

As he grew older, Ramanujan began to develop a deep interest in the properties of numbers and made significant contributions to the field of number theory. However, due to his lack of access to formal education and resources, his work went largely unnoticed. This began to change in 1913 when Ramanujan received a letter from the British mathematician G. H. Hardy.

The letter, which Hardy sent at the urging of a colleague, was a cordial invitation for Ramanujan to come to Cambridge, England to collaborate with Hardy and his colleagues. The letter was a turning point in Ramanujan’s life, as it provided him with the support and resources he needed to take his mathematical abilities to the next level.

In 1914, Ramanujan accepted Hardy’s invitation and traveled to Cambridge where he spent the next five years working with Hardy and other prominent mathematicians. During this time, he made several groundbreaking contributions to the field of mathematics, particularly in the areas of number theory and analysis.

Ramanujan’s work was highly original and often very complex, but his approach to mathematics was intuitive and he had an incredible ability to find solutions to difficult problems. Some of his most notable contributions include the Ramanujan prime, the Ramanujan theta function, and the Ramanujan conjecture. He also discovered nearly 3,900 results (many identities and equations, including properties of highly composite numbers and properties of primes in arithmetic progression) during his lifetime, including some that were very novel and had no proofs.

Ramanujan’s work continues to be studied and applied to this day. His insights and techniques have found applications in areas such as cryptography, computer science, and quantum physics. He also inspires many young mathematicians to pursue mathematics.
